Scarborough Village Community Garden Volunteer Appreciation Event

On Saturday, August 13, 2016, John, the garden’s Coordinator and Cynthia, the garden’s Summer Youth Coordinator organized a volunteer appreciation/get together event. It was held at the Scarborough Village Recreation Centre in the ANC (Action for Neighbourhood Change) kitchen from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

Many past and present volunteers of the garden came together and had lots of fun on the day. At the beginning of the event, volunteers played a guessing game called What Plant am I?. Volunteers would help give clues to a particular volunteer who would try to guess the word that is taped to their back. After that game, volunteers were given stickers which they used to attempt to place stickers on unsuspecting volunteers. The volunteer who placed all their stickers would win the game! Next, volunteers played the Anagram Challenge. Volunteers would be divided into groups and they would try to unscramble the words that were on a sheet of paper. Similar to the previous game, it was a race for whoever finishes first. Then, volunteers played Mafia, a game where certain volunteers were secretly assigned a role such as a doctor or Mafia and other volunteers would try to guess who is which.

While the games and activities took place, lots of delicious food was being prepared! Some of the ingredients used were picked right from the garden! Volunteers were able to make their own salad with many different vegetables including kale, lettuce, tomatoes, and numerous more. There were also cookies, juice, and freshly made smoothies. The main dish was a butternut squash pizza. All the volunteers worked together to create a delectable meal and at the end of the event, all the volunteers were very happy.
