Composting at the Scarborough Village Community Garden

At the garden, composting is an essential job that volunteers learn how to do. Here is the basic step-by-step process of composting at the Scarborough Village Community Garden:

1. After pulling the unwanted weeds in the garden, the weeds get disposed of in a pile beside the compost bins.

2. The weeds then get chopped up into tiny pieces with a shovel and put into one of the bins for decomposition. An important part of this step is layering the dirt at the bottom of the bin and then adding greens at the top.

3. After the weeds, leaves, sticks and other organic materials decompose, it is used as mulch to grow healthier and better fruits, vegetables, and plants.

4. The dirt left over from chopping up the weeds are afterward shoveled into another compost bin.

5. The dirt is later filtered through a screen that removes any rocks, sticks, and other unwanted materials. The sifted dirt is then used as soil for the garden beds.

Furthermore, watering and maintaining the compost bins allows microorganisms to break down the organic materials quicker. Composting is not difficult and has many benefits for any garden.
