Why Weeding is Necessary
There are always lots of weeds at the Scarborough Village Community Garden. Weeding is a job that is done daily and is critical to the health of the garden.
A weed is any unwanted plant. At the garden, removing weeds consists of using a trowel or simply pulling it out of the soil. While pulling weeds, it is important to get the whole root. If the root is still left in the soil, weeds can still grow back and rapidly too. Removing weeds contributes to a thriving garden.
One benefit of pulling out weeds from the garden is that it reduces the competition with other plants for nutrients, water, and air. Without weeds in the garden, fruits and vegetables have a wider access to the resources they need to survive. Furthermore, pulling weeds additionally loosens the soil as well.
Not only does removing weeds produce healthier vegetables, fruits, plants, and soil, but it will also improve the aesthetics of the garden! Tidying up the weeds will make the beds in the garden appear neat and orderly.
One way to easily reduce the number of weeds is to mulch! Mulching with dead organic materials such as leaves and branches creates a barrier between the soil and surface, causing weeds to be unable to obtain light.
Although volunteers at the garden remove weeds every day, it seems that the weeds in the garden grow faster than we can pull them out!
