Welcome from your Coordinator
Mid-summer greetings to all participants at Scarborough Village Community Garden! Whether you'e a long-time gardener at SVCG or just starting out, I really appreciate all your hard work.
Weatherwise it's been an up-and-down season so far, with weeks of drought-like conditions followed by a couple of very welcome downpours last week.
Many of us were chagrined at the ongoing pilferage of some of our vegetables, but that seems to have stopped when one person was caught in the act and spoken to by police.
It was fun to learn recently that pigweed and Jamaican callaloo are both types of amaranth, and edible! In my opinion the callaloo is tastier than the pigweed though.
I hope you all continue to support our lovely garden in whatever way you can. There are more ways other than just pulling out weeds, although I admit there seem to be more weeds than ever, and the war against them never seems to end!
Upcoming dates to add to your calendar - Saturday September 24, 2016 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - ANNUAL HARVEST FESTIVAL at Scarborough Village Community Garden - all welcome, details forthcoming.
Garden Limerick - Write your own limerick about the SV Community Garden!
Feel free to contribute your own (up to 3 or 4 verses) by sending it to scarboroughvillagecg@gmail.com
Here's one I wrote:
It's a rap, it's a rhyme, It's a tribute in verse To a patch of land where we grow healthy food It takes work but it's fun Mother Earth does her share While outside we're in such a good mood!
Time slows down in the garden While we work in the soil You just can't rush mother nature Radishes grow fast But tomatoes take time And the fresh taste is by far the best feature.
